Gaby Dalkin, the cookbook author and blogger behind What’s Gaby Cooking, has tried a lot of different immersion blenders over her 13 years as a recipe developer - and she says this is the best one she’s ever used. “It has a cup attachment that lets you use it as a regular blender, too, so it can replace multiple tools that would otherwise take up a lot of space.” “You can use the blender function to purée pumpkin or smooth out a custard for a cream pie, then swap it out for the whisk attachment to whip up some cream to top it with,” says Petra Paredez, the owner of Petee’s Pie Company in Brooklyn and the author of Pie for Everyone. “It has a rubberized lip so that it doesn’t scratch,” says Whitney. It’s good for sauces of any kind, really.” And no matter what you’re doing, it shouldn’t damage the bottom of any pots or pans or bowls. It’s good for eggs - like if you blend your scrambled eggs with one they’ll be so much creamier and better. I really think everyone should be using an immersion blender more. It’s sturdy and substantial and the motor is great. “It’s so easy to use, and so easy to clean. “Plus, I love the way it feels in my hand.” Posie Brien, recipe developer and writer of the food site 600 Acres, has had hers for even longer - over a decade. “For me, it’s just really brought a lot of utility when making soups and sauces,” he says. “It is on the bigger side,” says food writer and editor Alyse Whitney, “but it’s really powerful.” Matt Rodbard, a food writer, editor, and cookbook author, has had his for over five years. With 15 speeds, it’s the most high-tech of the bunch. The majority of the experts I spoke to named the Breville Control Grip their favorite immersion blender. Speeds: 15 speeds | Extras: Whisk, chopping bowl with blades, storage jar with lid The immersion blender? “It’s all about convenience.” It’s much easier to clean.” No matter which model you’re drawn to - likely from one of the few brands that seem to dominate the market - Cristensen’s points ring true. “It stores in a drawer and you can pull it right out. “I use mine way more than my full-size blender and food processor,” Simply Recipes associate general manager Emma Christensen told me. In fact, I found that it’s pretty common to own both a blender and an immersion blender - but that the ease of the latter is preferable whenever it can be employed. And while they may not be right for, say, big-batch smoothies or crushing nuts into butter (which takes a lot of force), they work totally great for emulsifying soups, marinades, dressings and aïolis and, yes, for making smaller smoothies. While many people find storing a blender in their kitchen to be worth it, the smaller (and overall less expensive) immersion blender can handle a lot of the same cooking tasks with less fuss. Based on my experience with the original in 2010, my favorite online mode was Most Wanted, which has one player trying to escape with a small team of other racers helping them – kind of like a VIP escort mission in other multiplayer games – while a team of cops try to take them out. There’s proper online multiplayer for up to 8-players too (which works with cross-play), but I didn’t have a chance to try that prior to this review. Nowadays racing games thread a lot of this data into races themselves, but Autolog still helps round things out here by funneling you towards activities your friends are also doing. The Autolog feature also returns here with its ‘Wall’ concept that shows a collection of times and accomplishments from all of your friends as a real-time representation of how much better (or worse) you are than everyone within your skill range. It’s not very deep customization, but the increased option is still a welcome tweak. I usually went with a gaudy neon blue, which is a very intimidating color as everyone knows. In the original game you could pick from just a few pre-selected colors before starting a match, but now there is a custom color palette wheel that lets you pick pretty much any color you could ever want. The paint options for every car in the roster have impressively expanded as well, even if other customization features aren’t available. You can now also take full advantage of all these shiny cars by pausing any race to access a robust photo mode (available in the garage as well), which even has an excellent feature that lets you toggle on or off mid-race damage. All of the original’s DLC is included in this single package, which is a nice bonus if not strictly new. So it’s nice to have another that encourages and rewards that behavior here.Īnd while there isn’t much in the way of brand new content, the main menu does have a nifty garage now where you can check out all the cars you’ve collected so far – and there are some absolute gems, including my personal favorite the BMW Z4, which looks like the kind of car you’d like to just go for a drive in on a lazy weekend (and crashing it is oddly therapeutic). Growing up on games like the original 1998 Hot Pursuit on the first PlayStation and the slew of racers it influenced, such as Burnout, trained me to enjoy recklessly ramming into cars in all racing games. One of the best parts of Hot Pursuit is all the little gadgets you get access to during events, like spike strips you can drop behind you to try and take out opponents or the road blocks you can call in as a cop to slow down your target. And if you just want to cruise around without stressing about the competition, every region includes a Freeride option as well. I particularly enjoyed stages near the coast with nice vistas or anything wet from rain since the lighting and reflections are great eye candy. I’m not a huge fan of the race “Preview” events, which generally boil down to having to do time trial runs through a course before you unlock its actual events, but it does help you get acclimated to that level’s turns. Those include straight up races, intercept events to chase down rogue vehicles, car chases, and more. Most events can be completed in under five minutes, and some far quicker than that. There’s something about Hot Pursuit's style and presentation that hearkens back to a simpler time when racing games were just about racing with no frills or filler – and without feeling like it’s missing features. Drifting around bends effortlessly, weaving in between opponents during a race, and just barely overtaking a cop car before the next curve is a special brand of intensity that’s unmatched elsewhere. Yes, you need to brake around corners and feather the gas a little bit to catch the right drift on turns, but it requires far less precision than something like Project CARS or Gran Turismo. It also nails that delicate balance between looking incredibly gorgeous and realistic (even at blistering 200 MPH+ speeds) while also being easy to control with its arcade-style physics. That’s it – there are no upgrades to worry about or complex customization features. As you complete challenges and increase your bounty, you slowly unlock new cars and new regions. There’s an overworld map with various locations that have you control either street racers or cops, acting as either the chased or the chaser, respectively, during any given event. Part of what keeps it so great is how it excels so well at the very specific thing it sets out to do: romanticize fantastical and over-the-top car chases. Once the score is tallied after each hand, another deal begins. Once 10 sandbags are reached, the team looses 100 points and starts over with 0 sandbags again. When either of these are not met, the team will get -100 and -200 points respectively. If a nil is bid and met, the team gets an additional 100 points. If a bid is not met, each trick in the bid is worth -10 points. If the bid for a team is met, each trick counts 10 points, with any additional tricks (sandbags) worth 1 point. Once the full hand has been played, the game is scored. Spades cannot lead a trick until they have been broken in another trick or if that is the only suit the lead player has left in their hand. The winner of the trick leads the next trick. If a trick contains a spade, the highest spade wins. If a trick is played without a spade, the highest lead suit card takes the trick. Moving clockwise, each player plays a card to follow suit, unless they do not have the suit, in which they can play any card in their hand. The Spades game begins gameplay with the player to the left of the dealer, who can play any card other than a Spade. .The payout will be higher if you achieve it, but the loss even greater if you don't - so bid this at your own risk! Teams must reach the total number of tricks they have bid together in order to get a positive score. If you bid a Blind Nil, you must bid a 0 without seeing your cards. The table then enters into the bidding phase where they estimate the number of tricks they can take with the hand they have been dealt. Spades is a game of trumps, where all spades are the best cards in the game and will beat all other suits.Įach hand begins with all 52 cards being dealt to the players. The version of 24/7 Spades is the most popular and is played with four Spades players in a team format, where players across the table are considered teammates. Spades is played with a basic set of 52 cards and card value ranks from 2, the lowest, to Ace, the highest. Spades is a casual card game developed in the 1930's in the USA. It’s impossible to discuss The Place Beyond the Pines in any detail without revealing that it’s really three movies in one (building upon Blue Valentine’s entwined-twofer gimmick), abruptly tossing the narrative baton from Luke to Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper), a rookie beat cop who ends up wrestling with a similar kind of fatherly anxiety but from a more privileged vantage point. The mouth-breathing exertions of a moody misfit to impress his baby mama and prove he’s not a loser makes for a pretty thin feature film, but Cianfrance has conceived his sophomore effort as an epic. Regarding his son with that ice-blue thousand-yard stare, Luke might be trying to see whether there’s any of him in there or Gosling might be trying to remember his lines (although, as in Drive, he’s been given a bare minimum of dialogue). Luke’s fears about setting a bad example for his young son turn out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, but where Gosling’s anguish about doing badly by his young daughter in Blue Valentine was that movie’s most affecting feature, here the actor seems locked into a caricatured pantomime of paternity. That this plan eventually involves picking up gigs as a bank robber suggests that Luke’s ideas about maturity have a decidedly adolescent tinge, and if The Place Beyond the Pines has a theme-answer: yes, yes it does-it’s the struggle to distinguish between different models of masculinity. Introduced striding purposefully through the fairground where he plies his death-defying trade as a stunt cyclist, Gosling’s “Handsome” Luke Glanton is the proverbial bad boy with a heart of (fool’s) gold after learning that the sexy townie (Eva Mendes) he’d slept with during his troupe’s last annual visit has quietly given birth to his son, he resolves to change his ways and become a dependable dad, though he doesn’t seem to own any clothing other than the t-shirts he always wears inside-out. By toggling between idealized scenes of naïve puppy love and long calcified regret and resentment, he surely meant to provide a well-rounded portrait of a troubled marriage, but the movie felt more like a hybrid highlight/blooper reel-a network of raw nerves in search of connective tissue.Ĭianfrance’s new drama, The Place Beyond the Pines, tries both tacks with its star, casting him in a part that’s eerily similar to his Drive cipher-he’s a taciturn gear-head who worships his motorcycle rather than his racecar-while also hypothetically affording him the opportunity to flex his thespian muscles. But it also exposed Cianfrance as a filmmaker who thinks in short cuts. Blue Valentine was spacious as an actor’s showcase, despite the film’s ironclad formal structure, which was to regularly juxtapose the happy beginning of its central couple’s courtship with its painful death throes-a quasi-Pinteresque conceit that generated precisely the sort of prefab pathos it was designed for. The exception to this tendency was writer-director Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine, which gave Gosling plenty of chances to stamp, holler, and run his hands through an artificially thinned hairline as a house painter whose marriage to his high school sweetheart (Michelle Williams) is falling apart. Either way, he doesn’t appear to be lifting a finger. This pale-rider quality was built into the hero-without-a-name conceit of Drive, which photographed its star like an impassive religious icon-or maybe a designer hood ornament-but even when cast as a silver-tongued charmer in Crazy, Stupid, Love or a hard-driving spin doctor in The Ides of March, Gosling has practiced the sort of acting in which slow-burning intensity is indistinguishable from catatonic paralysis. Has Ryan Gosling become the least surprising actor in American movies? Notwithstanding his post-Mouseketeer breakthrough as a Jewish neo-Nazi in The Believer, the chiseled Ontarian has steadily blanched out his actorly palette at this point he’s cornered the market on blankness. Thanks for the help in advance. I am familiar with ezQuake and got confs and skins there. I moved it to my nQuake install directory.ĮDIT: Here is some install help I ll give it another try.ĮDIT2: OK I just needed to put pak files to one fodquake dir and the fodquake is running "fine" atleast on this more powerful Macbook pro (Not my computer). Ok but where do I put fodquake binary? W_load_wad_file, Could not load gfx wad file, thats the error msg it says when starting. Other downloaded from EzQuake site crashes when you start new game. Ok now I downloaded nQuake package for this laptop for testing but ezquake-binary doesnt start. Had this error with old Mac Mini and MacBook pro. Converting Mac OS X specific files or something. There is some errors at the end of nQuake Mac OS X package installation. So I think it works pretty fine, but better talk to Tuna I think (#fodquake on Quakenet). On the other hand I know that fodquake is supposed to run really smooth on OSX since Tuna/bigfoot has fixed mouse input and a lot of other things there. I've gotten myself a Mac Mini too but I've got little to no time to focus on making ezQuake (or my version of it) work on OSX unfortunately. This is mainly because there's no OSX developers, or actually, there's no developers left at all (except for me, but I'm mostly busy with other stuff). If you got some good setups and confs please also share them!Īfaik ezQuake sucks pretty hard OSX if it even runs today. Both USB and Bluetooth mice are supported, no matter whether the mouse is designed for Windows or Mac. Please share your experiences with Quake and Mac OS X.Īnd do you use different mouse drivers like steerermouse to get 4 5 buttons working and acceleration off? Hows it working if so? SteerMouse does not support the Apple Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad and some special features. It is ok for normal use but what do you think about gaming. If you NEED that Razer mouse, and you NEED those 12 buttons, just know it’ll be a journey. So anyone playing QW with Apple? Hows it compared to Linux/Windows? I was thinking buying Mac Mini and using it with my gaming mouse, normal keyboard and 22" tft. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle, go Logitech. Logitech really is the stress free way to go.īeing 100% honest, I am really upset at Razer after using their mice for 10+ years and them dropping the ball on the “Mac Gaming” community. The device itself has never had any issues. It has NEVER had any issues with ANY mac updates, or any of my Macs. I have been using a Logitech trackball for a really long time since it’s really portable, and requires minimal space to use. It will just work, and Logitech has made sure to keep up with Big Sur, as well as M1 Macbook’s. If you are satisfied with that many, then I think you will be happy because the G604 will not require ANY special setup aside from the Logi software that you need to install. These complications aside, I have really enjoyed the Naga and it’s 12 buttons for WoW.įor the G604, I see it has 6 buttons compared to my 502 and Ergo. Other people have reported that if you select the colors inside of Synapse on a PC, it should remember those settings. The only downsides? You can’t change your Chroma colors and it’s $20. It allows extensive control over mapping ALL of your buttons, including the tilt wheel on the Naga / Naga Pro. Now, I ended up going a different route with an alternative to Razer Synapse called SteerMouse by Plent圜om. That said, Razer has made it clear they do not support Apple devices - so no hopes on Synapse 3 or this getting fixed. A quick Google search will tell you all the hoops you need to jump. First off, the Razer Synapse 2 software does not work well on Big Sur. There are difficulties using this mouse though. My favorite of all 4 devices has now become my Naga Pro, which I use both for work and for World of Warcraft. Hey have been playing WoW Classic for a few months on my M1 Macbook and have had experience using the following 4 devices: |
